The internet has completely transformed the advertising industry in many ways.
In the article "Virality in the Internet Age," Brian Hallett explores how this shift has made "going viral" a major goal for brands. The internet has revolutionized advertising, moving away from traditional media like TV and print to digital platforms that focus on social media, influencers, and targeted ads tailored to specific user interests. A significant change is the rise of social media influencers, who have become powerful promoters, providing more personalized and relatable content for brands  examples tiktok, facebook , instagram . Nowadays, the internet's social nature has shifted control to the users, who now hold the power to decide what gets shared.

Here is a video I found in the internet archives of Steve Jobs, while he was still working at NExT, years before returning to Apple, talking about how the internet, specifically e-commerce and the web will affect online advertising in the foreseeable future. To summarize his thoughts on how effective he believed this topic would be, “…I think it’s going to be huge…” (1995 Steve Jobs).

This New York Times article details how Google acquired DoubleClick Inc in 2008. DoubleClick Digital marketing is Google's integrated advertisement system that allows advertisers to manage advertisements across numerous platforms and apps. It's part of almost every Google app or product that can be advertised on - YouTube, search results, among many others. The massive 3.1 billion dollar acquisition is part of why Google has fallen under anti-trust speculation in recent times - it's a major part of the company's success.

I recently found an article online about how important advertising is these days. Ads are everywhere now, and companies want you to pay extra to get rid of them; but honestly, only a few people are willing to do that, so most of us just end up seeing them anyway. Personally, when I spot a brand’s ad on YouTube or at a sports event, I tend to think of that brand as more reliable. The article also talks about how much AI is involved in ads nowadays. Chatting with chatbots is pretty much unavoidable now, and they just keep getting smarter! https://www.vested.marketing/learning-center/five-ways-the-internet-changed-marketing-foreverLinks to an external site.

I found an article by CNBCLinks to an external site. that described how the Covid-19 pandemic accelerated several existing trends in the advertising industry, especially in digital marketing, connected TV, and e-commerce. As consumers stayed home, brands shifted ad spending toward more flexible, data-driven strategies that allowed for real-time adjustments. The article describes how the rise of connected TV platforms like HBO Max and Peacock, alongside a surge in e-commerce, ultimately led to an industry-wide increase in investments in digital advertising. Some companies also started using augmented reality (such as Sephora), to create virtual try-ons, and targeted influencers for marketing by sending out PR boxes to try to keep up with engagement.

Planters: Baby Nut- 2020 Super Bowl Ad is a fun example of how ads do not directly need to tell you to buy their product for you to take an interest in it. In the ad they essentially kill the old Mr. Peanut and showed the world a new baby Mr. Peanut. I personally don't like peanuts but the ad does a great job of making me want to buy some.

https://relevance.digital/why-youtube-shorts-are-important-for-luxury-brands/Links to an external site.

This article explains how luxury brands use YouTube Shorts to advertise their brand and products effectively. A Shorts is a minute-long video on YouTube. Since Google owns YouTube, the luxury brand Shorts is exposed to Google users at the top of the search page. Also, Shorts is good for conveying the brand’s story and identity. Audiences are more likely exposed to Shorts than entire content. Additionally, as Shorts is user-generated content (UGC), audiences feel a more personal connection to luxury brands through this media.

The "The Man Your Man Could Smell Like" campaign by Old Spice is a typical example of how creative advertising can develop in the era of social media to attract audiences and increase brand awareness. The event initially started as a series of humorous TV commercials, but quickly expanded to an interactive social media phenomenon.

The link I found was a youtube videohttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=icwWpAHReWgLinks to an external site.

It talks about how advertisement is making a product or something stand out to capture the eyes of an individual. Advertising has changed in our world from being on TV and radio, to now being on digital platforms like websites we use and applications in our lives. It talks about how successful ads are meant to trap human emotions and psychological triggers to influence consumers. Good advertising appeals to desires which makes a great connection between the product and the viewers. Advertising shapes society and influences our daily decisions, it allows businesses to reach the customers they are intended for. If a product has a good advertisement it would lead people to purchase it leading to more sales and wanting more of it.
