New normal - Everyone has had to adapt to 'personal distancing'. Many businesses and services will be changed forever. XR - eXtended Reality - Mixed Reality (MR), Augmented Reality (AR) and Virtual Reality (VR) alternatives are being developed to replace in-person experiences. Shopping, spectator sports, live entertainment, school are a few. Find an example of eXtended Reality (XR / AR / VR / MR). Include the link and a brief explanation of how you personally will be impacted by this development, and post to the New Normal - eXtended Reality discussion. Review 2 others.

I found this valuable linkLinks to an external site. "Google Arts & Culture" which  offers virtual reality tours of museums worldwide, allowing people to explore art and history from home. This XR development could impact me by providing access to experiences that I might not be able to see in person. It would make learning more interactive, as I could “visit” museums and explore exhibits that interest me at my own pace. This kind of virtual access helps broaden learning opportunities and makes cultural experiences more accessible to everyone.

This technology impacts me directly by helping me make better shopping decisions without needing to visit a store. It’s especially useful when planning layouts and avoiding purchases that may not fit or match my space. XR like this is reshaping how we interact with businesses, making shopping more convenient and personalized.

With the improvement and advancement of virtual reality, devices are becoming smaller and more affordable, and some companies are adapting existing technology to allow for different usages. Google Cardboard was a short-lived but promising concept that allowed anyone around the world to build a low-cost viewer out of materials like cardboard, simple lenses, and tape. During a history class, we were provided pre-built sets that had space for our phones, which became screens for the viewing device and allowed us to visit historical sites and discuss the topic with a fresh perspective.

I believe AR is transforming business meetings, particularly with the rise of remote work during the COVID-19 pandemic. It provides an immersive experience that boosts engagement beyond standard video calls, helping remote team members feel more connected. By blending real-world elements with digital enhancements, AR enhances communication and collaboration, enabling dynamic interactions and virtual tours. As AR technology advances, I’m eager to see how it will redefine the future of business meetings.

The Engage platform is a virtual reality tool used for education and training. It allows teachers to create immersive VR lessons where students can experience historical events, science labs, or space exploration. I think this platform could make learning more engaging by providing immersive and interactive environments in subjects that benefit from visualization like history or science.

The travel industry is one of the hardest hit by the Covid. Currently, this industry is launching an extended reality in this post-Corona era. Under the umbrella of extended reality, mixed Reality (MR), augmented Reality (AR), and virtual reality are benefiting the travel industry. Virtual reality (VR) enables users to explore various locations without visiting in person. It enables weekend getaways at a relatively cheaper cost. Also, XR tours are possible even to preserve certain areas where humans aren’t allowed to visit. The other benefit of XR is that it gives more detailed information on hotel rooms and amenities before booking. Additionally, virtual excursions help simulate different aspects of a trip, allowing travelers to optimize their time after arrival, navigate interactively, and health & safety training. I agree that XR would not replace the traditional method of travel. XR helps organize travel plans and enhance travel satisfaction. I wish I could test drive in various regions using XR before traveling to avoid trial and error.

I found an interesting app named IKEA Place. This is an app that allows users to see how the furniture would look in their own homes before they buy it. By using their smartphone or tablet camera, users can place the 3D models of IKEA products in their living spaces. This helps them to make decisions about size, style, and placement. For me, this development impact is fun because I can try out the furniture in my own space without going to the store or imagining how items will fit in my home. This is also reduces the problem like returns and cancel. This make saving time and resources. As we adapt to a new normal, tools like this can enhance our shopping experiences significantly.

Extended Reality (XR), including Augmented Reality (AR), Virtual Reality (VR), and Mixed Reality (MR), is changing the way we experience various aspects of life, from shopping and entertainment to education and work. These technologies combine the physical and digital worlds, allowing users to interact in real-time with virtual elements. For example, AR enhances the real-world environment through digital overlays on smartphones or AR glasses, while VR fully immerses users in the digital environment through headphones. MR is the most advanced technology that allows users to interact with both digital and real-world objects using MR headphones.
As these technologies become increasingly integrated into daily life, I can foresee their impact on my work and study methods. For example, remote work and education can become more immersive and interactive, allowing for virtual collaboration in shared spaces. Shopping and entertainment may also develop, with virtual try on or immersive music concerts replacing physical experiences. Personally, I am pleased to see how XR will create new learning opportunities, especially in the STEM field, by providing immersive practical experiences in virtual environments.

Extended Reality is a way to describe technology in the world today, it is something can be found in the physical and virtual world. It is expected that the XR market is going to reach 209 billion dollars and that our future could be looking a lot different then how it is today. Some examples of extended reality we have today are virtual reality, augmented reality and mixed reality. It is a way to combine the real world with the virtual world. In augmented reality it enhances the real world with digital details such as images, text, and animation with experience through AR glasses or via screens, tablets, and smartphones. It is a way for people not the be excluded from the real world but able to use technology to interact with things in front of them. For virtual reality it is different, users are sent to a full digital world and experience through a VR headset and sent to an artificial world. Something that is new is mixed reality where digital and real world objects are able to interact. It requries a MR headset and is a lot more processing  that VR and AR. The new development might have an impact on me because the world is changing, I can see new ways people are going to experience the world with technology and I can see a change in how advanced technology is getting in the world today. https://www.forbes.com/sites/bernardmarr/2019/08/12/what-is-extended-reality-technology-a-simple-explanation-for-anyone/Links to an external site.
