2. TOPIC: Culture and Technology

Culture - The internet and technology have had a dramatic impact on cultures around the world. Sometimes for good, sometimes not. Being aware of these is fundamental to our understanding of the internet in society. Find and post a resource that addresses some observations of interactions or reactions between culture and technology to the Culture and Technology discussion along with a brief description of the importance of this interaction.

I found this article "Does culture affect how people interact with technologies? " culture plays a significant role in shaping how people interact with technology. Different cultures have unique norms, values, and practices that influence how they adopt, use, and adapt to new technologies.

In some cultures, technology is primarily used for social interaction and building communities, but in my point of view people living in more diverse area are more focused on productivity and efficiency. This article is pointing that how these cultural differences shape the way we use technology in our daily lives.

The Influence of Culture on Technology Adoption and Design | by Jacobs Edo | MediumLinks to an external site.

I found this article and its quite interesting and goes over how culture does play a significant role in shaping how we not only adopt technology into our cultural society, but how it also shapes our acceptance of technology. It also brings up how cultural norms can impact how individuals accept technology as well as if people prefer to do traditional methods by hand, then technology won't be as accepted and integrated much into that society. It is quite an interesting read.

I found this article particularly interesting because it highlights the critical role culture plays in shaping technology adoption, design, and implementation. It stresses that technology should not only focus on innovation but also respect and incorporate diverse cultural values. By understanding cultural beliefs, we can create more inclusive, user-friendly solutions that break down barriers and drive innovation.

There is a book called Technological Revolutions and Financial Capital: The Dynamics of Bubbles and Golden Ages, written by Carlota Perez, that explores how technological innovations can drive cultural and economic changes. The book highlights technological revolutions and their social impacts, and explores the relationship between technology and society.

The UEN Pressbooks website details the multifaceted ways in which culture may be expressed online. Whether through the creation of art, the sharing of concepts, or the preservation of such artwork in a digital medium, technology plays a significant role in the modern world of cultural appreciation and expression. At the same time, lack of access to technology may restrict some people from sharing in cultures the same way, though their individual histories are no less rich. However, these histories may be at risk of being lost or erased as oral tradition wanes without sufficient efforts to support and preserve them.

ResourceHow can emerging technologies shape culture?Links to an external site.

Summary: This study dives into how emerging technologies like augmented reality and AI are changing culture—shaping identities, values, and how we interact. It presents a framework to explore how these technologies either blend into our current culture or completely transform it. I found this fascinating because it highlights the huge impact tech has, not just on daily life, but on how we see ourselves and our communities.

In his TEDx talk, Ramesh Srinivasan discusses how culture and technology shape each other. He shares examples of communities using technology to respond to local challenges, like fishermen in India during a tsunami and Indigenous groups using video tools for activism. Srinivasan emphasizes the importance of designing technology with diverse cultural inputs to ensure it serves all communities.

This article I came across talks about how technology has the impact on culture. It cites several viable talks pertaining to culture and technology and also has this question in it that I found to be and interesting one. “We’re lonely, but we’re afraid of intimacy. And so from social networks to sociable robots, we’re designing technologies that will give us the illusion of companionship without the demands of friendship.” Does this approach of using technology have an impact on relationships?"

This report from Pew Research dives into what we might expect from technology and culture by 2025. It talks about the cool benefits, like better communication and more access to info, but also points out challenges like privacy issues and the chance of feeling more isolated. It’s important to understand these changes because they help us figure out how technology affects our relationships and how we see the world around us.

The article I found examines the impact of mobile phones on South Korean youth culture, particularly on how they've impacted daily communication and social interaction. In recent years, as mobile phone ownership soared among young people, these devices became symbols of independence and self-expression,  shifting the focus from traditional family-oriented communication to individual connection. With the rise of constant connectivity amidst Korea's rapid modernization, new social norms are also developing, such as how ignoring calls can be seen as impolite. Ultimately, the changes seen in South Korean youth culture are not unique, technology has vastly reshaped communication patterns, identities, and social practices across the globe.

I found an interesting article about how technology affects K-pop culture (Korean Pop Culture). Spreading OTT (Over-the-top) popularity, K-drama attracted Asian Americans first and then spread out to Spanish or Portuguese telenovela watchers. YouTube played a significant role in connecting with the public and generating a global fandom. Thanks to technology, K-pop become popular and consumed the world widely.

Ramesh Srinivasan studies the relationship between technology, politics and society. In this Ted Talk he gave he went into detail about how different cultures interact with technology. He stated that we should focus less on what technology is doing for people ad more on what people around the world are doing with technology. That the relation ship between technology ad culture is on how culture shapes technology and not the other way around. He worked with a handful of Native American people to create an online format to how they traditionally share their ancestral stories.

The interaction between culture and technology continues to influence the evolution of modern society. For example, in Japan, technology has been integrated into daily life through the use of robotics in various fields such as elderly care, hotels, and manufacturing. This fusion of tradition and innovation demonstrates how efficiency and respect for the cultural values of the elderly affect technological development. Meanwhile, in Africa, mobile technology has played a crucial role in transforming communication, business, and education. Mobile banking, such as M-Pesa in Kenya, has fundamentally changed the way individuals access finance in rural areas, demonstrating how technology can adapt to people's unique cultural and socio-economic needs. Technology not only influences culture, but is also shaped by culture, bringing new forms of expression, interaction, and social norms. The global exchange of cultural ideas through digital platforms such as social media further highlights the interconnectedness and fluidity between culture and technology.

The observation I found between culture and technology shows how diverse communities around the world interact with each other and how they are shaped by modern tools like mobile phones and the Internet. For example in countries like India technology is influencing cultural practices in different ways people are documenting things and adapting to the new era of technology being the main use of everyday life. Technology has changed and is shaped by culture, having new forms of knowledge and interaction across global societies. People around the world are influenced by certain parts of other culture and how technology is used so they are adapting to the new change and seeing how it would fit them best to help better their life.
