3. TOPIC: Intellectual Property keywords

  1. Choose 2 words from the Keywords list. Find a resource that provides information about each of the words you select and how they relate to the course. Post the words, links to your selected resources, and a brief description about your selection for each, to the discussion Intellectual Property keywords. Follow links provided by 3 other students, review their resources, and write a brief reply for each.

The two words related to intellectual property keywords I would choose copyright and trademark.

Copyright

Copyright is important to the course because it explains how intellectual property laws protect creative works like books, music, and digital content. These laws stop others from using the work without permission. The blog post on copyright infringement cases from BytesCare provides an insightful look into various real-world examples of how copyright laws are enforced. It highlights some key cases where individuals and companies have violated copyright laws, leading to legal battles and significant penalties.

Trademark:
A trademark is a sign, word, or phrase that is legally registered to represent a company or product. It helps distinguish the business from others. It is important to protect your trademark. This is the blog post written by Jane Haskins, Esq "How to Protect Your Trademark: 6 Methods" explaining how to prevent and maintain your trademark. After reading the article I have learned that trademark protection is not a one-time event but an ongoing process. The post also highlights the importance of regular monitoring, as trademarks can lose their distinctiveness or value if not actively defended.

Dear Vincent,

Thank you for explaining about piracy and patents. I like the way you explained, it's easier to understand. I like how you broke down piracy as using someone’s work without permission, particularly in digital formats like movies or software. The example of digital piracy helps show why intellectual property laws are important for protecting creators. You made a good example with Shark Tank, which helps me understand easily how patents protect inventors by giving them exclusive rights for a limited time.

 Hi Suliman

I like the way how you explained intellectual property as creations of the mind that are protected by law, giving creators control over how their work is used. This protection is crucial for encouraging innovation and creativity. The information you provide highlight the balance between protecting innovation and promoting.  It highlights that the intellectual property laws protect the exclusive rights of creators, the open-source model allows for more collaboration and sharing

Hi Liang ,

I like how you highlighted that trade secrets protect confidential business information that gives companies a competitive edge without requiring formal registration. It’s also interesting to learn how businesses need to actively maintain the confidentiality of their trade secrets. Thank you for sharing valuable information.
