1. TOPIC: Observations and Predictions *
See the Assignments page for the description of the activities and discussion prompts for this Module.
Wi-Fi (Wireless Fidelity) is a wireless networking technology that uses radio waves to provide high-speed internet and network connections over short distances. It allows devices like smartphones, laptops, and tablets to connect to the internet without the need for cables. Wi-Fi operates using radio frequencies, typically 2.4 GHz or 5 GHz, and works through wireless routers that transmit data to connected devices.
Li-Fi (Light Fidelity), on the other hand, is a wireless communication technology that uses light to transmit data. Instead of radio waves, Li-Fi uses visible light from LED bulbs to send information to devices equipped with light sensors. Li-Fi has the potential for faster data transmission rates than Wi-Fi and can be useful in environments where radio frequencies cause interference, such as hospitals or airplanes. However, it requires a line-of-sight connection and doesn’t work through walls.
In short, Wi-Fi uses radio waves, while Li-Fi uses light to enable wireless communication.
In considering the technology that will have a major impact on modern society, it's essential to observe current trends and make informed predictions. One such technology is Artificial Intelligence (AI). AI is already transforming industries like healthcare, finance, and transportation with its ability to process vast amounts of data and make decisions. Predictions suggest that AI will continue to evolve, leading to advancements in personalized medicine, autonomous vehicles, and even new forms of communication.
The 2 technologies I see that will have a big impact on society would be AI and Data processing. Firstly for AI, we could already see what it is capable of in its early stages and not even fully developed, and still it performs very well and has already improved our lives in such a big way. Second is Data processing because it is connected with AI as it uses machine learning to improve and function properly
The two technologies that I see having a major impact on society would be AI and data science and analytics processing. The use of AI improves efficiency in the industries when used for good causes. With the use of both of these it helps tackle complex problems like climate change, disease prediction, and resource management by analyzing datasets. With the use of data and analytics it's also how marketing works when working through online tools. This is how a lot of people make their commission and use it for a greater cause. Although I know most of the online tools could be bias and cause privacy issues, there are ways to help secure your data to prevent data breach, but it still brings societal challenges that need careful management.
I'd say Artificial Intelligence is already having a major impact on society as a whole and that it paired with robots, will completely transform everything in only a few short decades.
I'm honestly a bit worried about where this will go, as I don't want to sit around collecting UBI being poisoned by the corporatocracy for existing as a leech. I'd much rather live in a future where the worst most tedious or physically dangerous and strenuous tasks are automated, and the average person ends up with a quality of life that allows them the freedom to follow whatever passion or skill they want, so that they can serve the greater good productively and fully fulfilled. Unfortunately, even with the tech we do already have, it isn't being utilized to its full potential to stop things like crime, poverty, or war. It could be argued it's adding to these issues, as much or more than it's helping in other areas.
I believe that 2 technologies we should be conscious about is the use of AI in everyday life, which has become common place now days, but the fact that it is keeping people from being or using their creativity is huge deal. Robotics on the other hand can and will assist in many tedious chores which have always made humans bored in doing. So aside that it would take some human jobs, it will also alleviate tedious tasks that were a burden everyday in life.
In my opinion, cyber security and robot will have an impact on society. In some dangerous industries , we can use robot instead of human. That might improve work place safety. But we also need people to manage the robots even they can play in large role. Cyber Security can protect personal informations and national informations from cyber threat. If cyber security can protect strong trust in society, people don't need to worry about losses such as financial losses, data losses and privacy losses. It is essential to maintain safety.
In my opinion, the types of technologies I see as most impactful in society involve WiFi and cloud storage. Although these technologies have already impacted society greatly, they are consistently being improved upon. From faster WiFi to greater storage, these two have become fundamental aspects of technology. Almost everything related to technology is built upon them.
The Two biggest technologies i see having a huge impact on society would be Human Computer Interfaces and Artificial Intelligence. One has potential to impact the technology for medical sciences, Like the implants we've been starting to see from Elon Musk's company and the other has the potential to better our lives in everyday use. A.I. is being integrated into our phones to help us get through certain tasks we do daily, like sending emails that are worded professionally. There's small integration for that right now, but what it has done so far is either being abused or used fast computer processing. Human Computer Interfaces have the huge potential to help disabled people do tasks they weren't able to do after a certain traumatic event. There's upsides and downsides for both of these technologies but it all depends on how society will use them on a daily basis.
The two biggest technologies that i foresee being a big impact on society is AI- Artificial Intelligence and Robots. With the advance development of Artificial Intelligence we're reaching points we only thought of a few years back. AI is now slowly being integrated into daily life and is creating a strong foothold on society. It allows for instant answers to questions we ask, as well as create and expand on things we ask of it.
Robots are also becoming a foreseeable future. With the advancement of AI and how we can apply them to robots, we are able to now create manmade workers. This is a double edged sword that could be frightening or enlightening for society's future. Should robot's replace the average worker it would be quite detrimental.
One of the biggest technologies that is up and coming in these recent years is AI-Artificial Intelligence. It has been changing the society plus the technology industry drastically. Having the help of AI, we can have selected and summarized information without going through the process of finding and reading all the information. AI can give us results within seconds and speeding up the information sorting process. It will definitely change a lot of things in our community.
Moreover, we cannot forget about computational devices like chipsets that can take in data, process it and give out result. These little but yet powerful tools are the house millions of codes that process everything we do on the computer and phones. These devices have been such an important feature not only for the technology field, but also for our economy.
From my personal perspective, the Internet of Things (IoT) and cloud computing are undoubtedly two technologies that I think have a profound impact in today's society.
First of all, I am deeply impressed by the Internet of Things (IoT) technology. It builds a huge, real-time data network by cleverly connecting various physical devices and sensors. This technological innovation has not only made the once unattainable concepts of smart homes and smart cities a reality, but also set off a revolution in industrial automation, environmental monitoring and other fields. Imagine that IoT sensors in smart cities can collect key data such as traffic flow and air quality in real time, providing valuable decision-making basis for urban planners, so as to manage resources more effectively and reduce traffic congestion and environmental pollution. In the fields of medicine and agriculture, the application of IoT technology has shown its unlimited potential, providing patients with more accurate medical services and bringing farmers more efficient production methods.
On the other hand, the rise of cloud computing has also made me see the power of technology. It provides flexible and scalable computing resources and data storage services in an unprecedented way, allowing enterprises and individuals to easily obtain and use IT services, greatly reducing IT costs and improving resource utilization. More importantly, the popularity of cloud computing has greatly promoted the development of big data analysis and artificial intelligence. Nowadays, enterprises and research institutions can easily process and analyze massive amounts of data through cloud computing platforms, and dig out valuable information and insights hidden in them. This not only provides strong support for corporate decision-making, but also provides small and medium-sized enterprises with the opportunity to compete with large enterprises, promoting economic innovation and development.
Two technologies that I believe will continue to have a significant impact on society are Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Mobile Devices.
Artificial Intelligence (AI), particularly with advancements in Large Language Models (LLMs), is changing how we interact with technology and access information. LLMs like ChatGPT and others are enabling more natural conversations with machines, helping with tasks like writing, coding, and even tutoring. The ability of these models to understand and generate human-like text has major potential for education, customer service, and creative industries. But it also raises important discussions around responsible use, data privacy, and how to ensure AI is used ethically and effectively.
Mobile Devices—specifically iOS and Android platforms—have transformed how we live, work, and communicate. With almost everyone carrying a smartphone, iOS and Android provide access to a vast ecosystem of apps and services for everything from health tracking to social media. The competition between these two platforms drives innovation in mobile technology, leading to better user experiences and capabilities like improved cameras, augmented reality (AR), and secure payments. As mobile devices continue to evolve, they’re not just tools for communication but have become central to how we manage our lives and connect with the world.
Augmented Reality and Virtual Reality significantly impact society because they change how we experience the world around us. AR adds digital information to our natural environment, which can improve things like learning, healthcare, and shopping by giving us more valuable details in real time. VR, on the other hand, lets us dive into entirely new virtual worlds, making entertainment, training, and even therapy more engaging. As these technologies improve, they could reshape industries, help people work together in new ways, and create exciting opportunities for innovation and connection.
The two technologies that I believe will have an impact on society now and in the future are, artificial intelligence for sure, and wearables.
Artificial intelligence is already here and growing at an alarming rate. It helps us in our day to day lives and will either continue to help us or it could be like the Matrix one of these days. You never know! We use AI in our day to day lives for so many different things, as time goes by, I think that it will become unimaginable not having it to help us with things.
Wearables I think, is something that is going to greatly expand sooner rather than later. Wearables are already present for most people today. A good example is a smart watch. A lot of people have smart watches and use them to aid in communication and portability. I believe that watches are just the tip of the iceberg though. Its hard to imagine what we might have 20 years from now.
Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Wi-Fi play significant roles in our lives:
Artificial intelligence: Artificial intelligence is (predominantly) the ability for a computer or machine to mimic certain types of human intelligence, such as learning, problem solving, seeing and understanding images or language.
Wifi: Wireless communication technology enabling devices to connect to the Internet or communicate with one another within a particular area.

Two technologies that come to mind when thinking about what will impact society now and moving forward, you don't need to look further than VR and Robotics. VR is a powerful tool that helps individuals process PTSD related to war and combat. It places the individual in the setting in which the trauma originated from. This allows the person to go through the scenario and piece together things that might be triggering the abnormal sensory reactions they are experiencing.
As it relates to robotics, they are widely used in many aspects of society. Take the pandemic for example. During the first year of "shelter-in-place" and quarantine periods, robotics were used to deliver food orders all throughout the bay-area. I personally saw it take place in Mountain View, downtown area. It was so futuristic and strange all at once. In the hospital setting, robotics are used to transport medications and other lab orders, assists in plastic surgery, cardiovascular surgeries, and oncology operations.
The future is now, ladies and gents!
This might sound a bit odd, but it’s something I’ve always thought about, and I figured it’s worth bringing up. I’ve always wondered if, at some point, we’ll be able to send scents or even the sensation of touch. We’re also gradually advancing in technology, reducing the need for certain feelings and experiences we typically have in person.
The two technologies I believe will continue to impact society over the next few years are Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Augmented Reality (AR). Both are still in the early stages of their product cycles, and I think they will develop and mature in tandem. For example, AI is already integrated into smart devices we use today, like iPhones with Siri. Recently, companies like OpenAI have partnered with Apple to integrate their ChatGPT large language model (AI) seamlessly into iOS 16. Augmented Reality is another emerging technology. If it becomes as integrated into our daily lives as tech companies expect, AI could easily become a part of the future of interaction technology.
