Selected Media Item: Women in AI: Urvashi Aneja is researching the social impact of AI in India | TechCrunch
Summary: This article highlights Urvashi Aneja, the founding director of Digital Futures Lab, who is focused on examining the intersection of technology and society, particularly in the context of AI in the Global South. Aneja's research emphasizes the social implications of AI, including its impact on employment, education, and governance. The piece underscores the importance of including diverse perspectives in AI development to ensure it benefits all segments of society.

What interests me about this selection is the emphasis on social responsibility in technology, especially in regions like India where AI can significantly influence various sectors. It raises important questions about equity and inclusion in the tech industry.

Keywords/Study Questions Addressed:

  • Social Impact of AI
  • Technology and society interaction
  • Importance of diverse perspectives in tech development

Questions I Have:

  1. How can we ensure that AI development is inclusive and considers the needs of underrepresented communities?
  2. What role do governments play in regulating AI to protect citizens' rights?
  3. How can education systems adapt to prepare future generations for a job market increasingly influenced by AI?

I see how media shapes our culture, values, and perceptions. Whether it’s through television, films, social media, or news outlets, media plays a pivotal role in influencing public opinion, shaping political discourse, and reflecting societal norms.Media also plays a role in reinforcing or challenging societal norms. For instance, in movies and TV shows, the representation of diverse groups—whether based on race, gender, or sexuality—can either promote inclusivity or perpetuate stereotypes. I find it interesting how over time, more media creators are challenging these traditional narratives, pushing for more equitable and authentic representations. In summary, selected media is a mirror of society, constantly shaping and reflecting our values, beliefs, and behaviors. It has the power to inform, unite, or divide, depending on how it’s consumed and understood.

I reviewed the TechCrunch article that highlights women in AI, featuring Urvashi Aneja, who leads the Digital Futures Lab. Her research looks at the societal impact of AI in India, and she’s proud of her work focusing on social justice and labor issues within AI. She suggests that women entering the field should build a broad understanding of AI as part of a larger system and emphasizes the need for responsible development by asking critical questions from the start. This information seems useful to men too honestly..

The "Did You Know 2023" video caught my attention with its focus on how quickly technology is changing our lives, especially with AI and the internet. my questions are, how we can keep up with these changes and ensure tech is used ethically. I'm curious about how we can prepare for these advancements and what steps we can take to prevent misuse of AI.

I watched the "Did you know 2023" video and I never realized the amount of people that are on social at the same time whether it's on any social media platform. All social media platforms have at least up to 1billion of active monthly users plus more. This touched technologies impact as a society by millions way more than there was back then. What really interested me is that there are a lot of students preparing for jobs that haven't even been made yet and also use technologies that haven't been invented by next year. This leads me into thinking will we as a society work to combat problems that need solving that don't exist yet together or against each other? A lot of jobs will be generated by AI, so does this mean the same amount of people will lose their jobs because of it

I watched Did You Know 2023 and it was crazy how reliant and dependent people are with technology. Businesses and governments run their operations with it as well. I use social media every day, and sometimes forget how many other people are on their social media accounts the same or even more than me. It's crazy how we can all be connected through an app that someone just coded and designed.

I watched "Did you know 2023". That was really interesting. 120 zettabytes of unique new data created worldwide in 2023. Also there were some kind of jobs that did not exist now.

I watched the video "DID YOU KNOW 2023" (https://www.youtube.com/watch?si=zeEzijAOzX1pTgfc&v=u_7G8Xy61zs&feature=youtu.beLinks to an external site.). Today, the internet dominates most of our lives. With more than 5 billion users on the internet, 120 Zetabytes of data was created in just 2023. We are developing at a such a rate that we need to prepare for jobs that don't even exist yet.

So the question is, should we be focusing on the future's problems when we have so many present problems that are left ignored?

And, will out present problems affect our future solutions, or  will our future solutions fix our present problems?

I personally rate Calculating Empires very highly. It allows me to witness the revolutionary changes in technology from the past to the present in the form of a timeline chart, and I am full of expectations for the future. I particularly appreciate its exploration of human knowledge, genetic testing, and the impact of social media on gender cognition. At the same time, I am also shocked by the future possibilities of artificial intelligence supercomputers and planetary computing systems.

Topic: Selected Media - Society (Women in AI: Urvanshi Aneja is researching the social impact of AI in India)

I decided to go with the article, "Women in AI: Urvashi Aneja is Researching the Social Impact of AI in India" by TechCrunch. Aneja is the founding director of her own AI research lab, where she conducts interdisciplinary research on AI and its social and economic impact on the Global South, specifically India. Aneja emphasizes the need for responsible AI development, focusing on ensuring fair labor practices and urging investors to scrutinize the product cycle of AI and the reasons for its creation.

Some of the questions that come to mind are,  how Aneja proposes big companies be held accountable when it comes to AI development and their larger societal impacts?

Another question I’m curious about is what are some of the key factors she believes should be considered when AI is the proposed solution to a problem?

I found the interview with Urvashi Aneja from TechCrunch’s "Women in AI" series particularly compelling. Aneja's work focuses on the social impact of AI in India, especially in terms of algorithmic decision-making and platform governance. What stood out to me is her emphasis on understanding AI as a socio-technical system, urging us to see beyond just the technical applications and consider broader societal and ethical impacts, like power imbalances and environmental concerns. It’s interesting how she highlights the need for responsible AI development, suggesting that we ask ourselves if AI is even the right tool for the job before diving into complex solutions.

Questions I have about AI and society:

  1. How can we ensure AI's development doesn’t further exacerbate social inequalities?
  2. We know that AI is computing resource intensive. What strategies can be put in place to make AI development more environmentally sustainable?
  3. How can end-users of AI be better educated about its limitations without shifting the responsibility onto them?

The video I chose was "Did you Know 2023", this video highlighted what we as a society choose to watch or view on the internet and what sites or specific apps caught a majority of the internet traffic. It also told us how much more we are connected than ever before with billions using the internet daily. Do we choose to spend a majority of our days on the internet for learning or for mostly entertainment values? With how connected we are, do impoverished countries benefit more from learning new things to improve their daily lives on the internet than say people in the U.S.? With the introduction of A.I., will we start to see jobs being overtaken by A.I?

This video touched on technology's impact on society and how it has served as a significant force for change. Technology has transformed countless aspects of our lives as a result of having over 5.2 billion people use the Internet, as such we've experienced changes in lifestyles and daily routines, transportation, and communication. The video mentioned how over 15 billion IOT Devices will be connected to the internet by 2023, what dangers could this impose? Additionally the video mentioned how AI could create 97 million jobs by 2025, what does this mean for the jobs that AI is expected to replace and in what sector could these potential jobs fall under?

I found the “Did You Know 2023” video is very interesting, it tells us about the development of technology in society. One of the most remarkable details was about how there are jobs that did not exist or needed in 2013, which was 10 years ago from the video’s date. It also says that kids who are in school will be having jobs which might not be existed due to the technology advancement in the future bringing new job opportunities.

Calculating Empires was my preferred choice from the list at the bottom of the page. I enjoy history and learning about it. I really like the broad range of information that this site contains. Not only does it provide diagrams with text, there is also an audio option to listen to. Past, present, future, and shortcomings are keywords that are present in this site.

Calculating Empires was by far my favorite option to review. It amazes me how much innovation and development has occurred throughout the course of history. The Human body, for instance. The development of knowledge and understanding as it relates to how the body works and what to do in order to have it function at its best. Even just recently with genetic testing and how it allows for better understanding into what each of our DNA says about us. It also strikes me as odd how social media platforms has influenced how we associate gender and sexuality. So many moving parts in modern society to follow.

I found the "Calculating Empires" to be extremely fascinating and in awe of how much information from the past present and even possible future it holds and what has been studied is currently being studied and what is to possibly come in the future. I found myself being drawn to multiple images throughout the page but one that stood out to me is AI Supercomputers and Planetary- Scale computational systems. Ai is becoming more and involved in many fields and will even possibly take over large scale work that was done but multiple people and with that it would need to be able to handle all that data so an Ai supercomputer could become more prevalent in the near future with the possibility of it becoming planetary level which would be a monumental feat.

I find "The Calculating Empire" very interesting and unique. It shows the keywords past, present, and future in our module in a timeline diagram that allows viewers to physically see how each technology in their respective category has revolutionized, starting from the past and progressing through the years. It also provides quick descriptions to inform the viewer in a very fun way.
